Amsterdam, Netherlands

the city that's been a squad-trip greatest hit since before group chats. lean into it.

vibe
canals, cycling, design, cafés, no rush
best time
April–May (tulips), September (light + fewer crowds). avoid august.
ideal length
4–5 days
scout's take

amsterdam runs on a slower clock than the squad expects. don't try to do five museums; do two and let the canals carry you. cycling is the unlock — even one afternoon on a bike rewires the city's geography. the thing nobody tells you: noord, across the IJ ferry, is where the design + food scene is moving. spend a day there. eat herring at the cart. get a stroopwafel made fresh. book the anne frank house weeks ahead. the city rewards the squad that walks instead of pre-planning.

things to do

rijksmuseum

the night watch + vermeer + dutch master rooms. plan two hours. book ahead.

noord ferry

free ferry from centraal to NDSM or buiksloterweg. design hotels, eye filmmuseum, food halls. the day-trip everyone forgets to do.

jordaan canal walk

the prettiest walking neighborhood. start at the nine streets, drift through the canals, end at café papeneiland.

albert cuyp + de pijp

street market + the food neighborhood. stroopwafel from the cart, indonesian rijsttafel for dinner.

anne frank house

book online weeks ahead, no walk-ups. one of the most quietly devastating museums anywhere.

vondelpark + bike rental

rent at macbike or yellow bike (a half-day is enough). loop the park, then ride into the jordaan.

where to stay

jordaan

most walkable, prettiest canals. cafés, boutiques, slightly residential. best first-trip neighborhood.

de pijp

food + market neighborhood. younger, livelier, a tram ride from centrum. great for a foodie squad.

oud-west

leafy, design-y, lots of food. a 10-min walk from vondelpark. quiet at night.

noord

across the IJ. industrial-chic, design hotels, cheaper. for a squad that's done amsterdam before.

flight hint

schiphol (AMS) is 15 min by train to amsterdam centraal (~$5). klm, delta, united from us east coast. the train is faster than the taxi.

plan amsterdam with the squad.
