scout's take

hamburg is the trip the squad takes when they think they want berlin and end up loving the alternative more. it's a port city built around water (lake alster, the elbe, hafencity), with a music scene that runs deeper than anywhere in germany. reeperbahn isn't just the strip, it's the festival in september that takes over every venue in town. spend a day on the harbor (elbphilharmonie + speicherstadt), a day in schanze and st. pauli, and a sunday morning at fischmarkt. food is fischbrötchen at the cart, currywurst when nobody's looking. cooler than it lets on.

things to do

speicherstadt + hafencity walk

unesco warehouse district + the new waterfront. one continuous walk, water on both sides. end at elbphilharmonie viewing platform (the plaza is free).

elbphilharmonie concert

the city's pride. acoustics legitimately great. book any concert you can get tickets to; the building is the experience.

schanze + st. pauli wander

cool kid neighborhood + gritty nightlife strip back-to-back. start with coffee on schulterblatt, end at a gig on reeperbahn.

fischmarkt sunday

5am to 9:30am only. fishmongers shouting, beer drinkers from the night before, brass band. a hamburg ritual. go once.

alster lake walk

rent a paddleboat, walk the perimeter, or just have lunch waterside. central, calm, very hamburg.

harbor boat tour

the cheap commuter ferry (line 62 from landungsbrücken) is the best harbor tour. costs the price of a transit ticket, lasts an hour.

a sample 3-day plan

scout will tweak this for your squad's vibes once you start a trip.

  • 19:00 · elbphilharmonie plaza at golden hour
  • 20:30 · dinner at brücke 10 or oberhafenkantine

day 3

fischmarkt + alster

  • 09:00 · breakfast back at the hotel, nap optional
  • 12:00 · alster lake walk + paddleboat
  • 15:00 · kunsthalle (art museum) or miniatur wunderland
  • 19:00 · dinner at heimathafen or apfelmost

where to stay

sternschanze / karoviertel

cool kid neighborhood. cafés, vintage, walkable to st. pauli + the harbor. squad-friendly.

hafencity

modernist new build. polished, design hotels, on the water. quiet at night.

altona / ottensen

residential, leafy, food scene. a short s-bahn ride from everything.

st. pauli

gritty, loud, cheap. for a squad that wants to be in the action; book one block off reeperbahn.

flight hint

hamburg airport (HAM) is 25 min from the center by s-bahn. lufthansa, ba, klm, american all serve it; for the us east coast, ewr/jfk via reykjavik (icelandair) is often the best deal.

plan hamburg with the squad.
